Why no Sports Forum?
« on: September 24, 2012, 12:12:42 AM »
Ravens' rookie kicker--Justin Tucker--made up for the missed field-goal by veteran Billy Cundiff last year against the Pats that cost the Ravens the playoffs.  Beat the Patriots--31-30 in the last 2 seconds of the game, even after the Ravens lost four of their best guys due to the CBA settled last year.  And the  Ravens' QB Joe Flacco was statistically superior to Pats' "Superstar" Tom Brady.

Bwa-hahahahaha.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good question. No t.v., movie or book forums, either, unless I've just missed seeing them.

Such forums would disenfranchise the hundreds of thousands or millions of Americans who don't have TVs, can't afford to go the movies, or can't  read. We won't  even go into the ones who can't  play their sport of choice because they are morbidly obese, crippled, or just untalented.

Lame, Obs. Yeah, it would be nice to have a forum here where folks could go to get away from the political bullshit occasionally and at least pretend to be real human beings every once in awhile. Those of us who are, I mean.

We have literature

http://www.newsrake.org/index.php/board,14.0.html

Music and art:

http://www.newsrake.org/index.php/board,11.0.html

We can add sports if there's enough interest, I think we tried it once before.

Go Yankees, Knicks, Islanders and Giants!

absolutely nothing will be found.

there is nothing to be found.

Basketball maybe.  To me football has always been a parade trying to disguise itself as a game.  There are numerous other examples but the most blatant one in my opinion is the punt on fourth down.  When everyone in the stadium knows what is going to happen 99% of the time, that's a Kabuki dance with helmets not a game.   Still "A hits B--B falls down goes boom!" absolutely packs 'em in and I give football all of the commercial kudos it so richly deserves.  After all this slammin' I do have a team and that is (hold the guffaws) THE RAIDERS!

Why?

1)Al Davis changed forever all three major sports in this country when he stood up to the NFL commissioner, went to court and ended forever the practice of forcing teams to stay where they were. (he also won the SuperBowl that year...)

2)Thinking outside the box, something football imo, desperately needs more of, the Raiders forced two rules changes. The first, was when the NFL made it illegal for the offense to advance a fumble.  Largely because the Raiders had incorporated that into their play book with Raiders running down the field and "accidentally fumbling" the ball into the hands of a teammate.  The second, the in the grasp rule, many experts believe was brought about because of the famous Ken Stabler, Raider quarterback
3)AGAIN thinking outside the box, Al Davis and the Raiders were the first team to sign a star from another sport(Bo Jackson)something unheard of until then.  Football was waayyy too cool to accept a part time player available only during their other sport's off season.   Someone forgot to tell Al Davis it wasn't cool.

I don't know what happened to the late Al Davis.  He got old and weird and was actually hurting the team for many years.  Maybe he couldn't handle the money, who knows but he was a brilliant coach himself, the only team owner in NFL history to actually play in the NFL and perhaps football's greatest innovator...

The most successful men I know will tell you that they are only successful because they are able to accept ‘no’ and not take it personally. Again, unsuccessful men take a ‘rejection’ as a personal assault on their inner child. Don’t make this mistake.

Football has always looked to me like a heavily padded Chinese fire drill. Plus, I think it's hard for the average human being, unless it's a male at least 6'4" and built like a gorilla, to imagine doing what they do, which is half the fun, I think - the fantasy that you could go out there and be a pro athlete.  The Arizona Diamondbacks' current starting center fielder is 5'8" tall.  I like a sport where it's possible for a guy to at least dream about participating, in some capacity, without necessarily being a mutant.

a bit off topic I'm just psyched my boys are now of the age where they are playing more sports (5 and 7) so I'm shooting hoops, throwing footballs, playing catch and kicking soccer balls again for the first time in decades.

blasphemy.  i'm 5'11 and i played football virtually my entire life; throughout a division 1 college program (Illinois).  many professional running backs and defensive backs are 5'10 and below.  a few starting DB's and TB's are even 5'8".

Well, see, they said it wasn't possible, but even I can be wrong!   ::)

I've just never been into any of the "back and forth" sports.  Baseball is all I understand.  I fully confess my prejudice.

it's called strategy fs.  football is always a constant tug of war to establish field position.  based on the law of averages and the constantly ticking clock,  coaches do not always opt to punt on 4th down.

yeah,  he's 5'8".  he weighs almost the same as I did at my fighting weight though,  212 lbs.  that's a tough package to tackle.
