How much do republicans hate fiture nominee Mitt Romney?  So much so that they gave Rick "Man on Dog" Santorum three victories last night.  One website referred to it as a "Mittastrophy" (largely because Mr. Romney lost 2 states he had won in 2008).  Anticipating his victory, Mr. Santorum tweeted the following about the ruling on prop 8:

Quote

7M Californians had their rights stripped away today by activist 9th circuit judges.  As president I will work to protect marriage.

Proposition 8 denied marriage to homosexuals, how does overturning that strip away rights from anyone?

They have a right to prevent others from having a right?    Roll Eyes

Anyway good for the bible thumper.   Naturally I'd love to see Santorum take it from Romney.

From the ruling...

Quote

"The people may not employ the initiative power to single out a disfavored group for unequal treatment and strip them, without a legitimate justification, of a right as important as the right to marry."

"Proposition 8 denied marriage to homosexuals, how does overturning that strip away rights from anyone?" -hp

it strips away their democratic process, their right to make  their own rules.  their right to not allow one certain group to change definitions

I forget, john, are you for or against gay marriage?

or is that too tough of a question for you to answer?

Gay Marriage is a Constitutional right?

I'd like to read that one.

It is an incredulous answer.  "The people" do not have the right to deny essential rights to others.  i agree with the court on this as far as it concerns civil institutions.

With regard to gay marriage, i affirm the teaching of the church.  However, in a nation that is established on the disestablishment of religion, i have to recognize that there are rights and institutions that will be extended to people whether or not i agree with them.  In addition, we are discussing marriage as an institution regulated by the state, not as a sacrament.  We have had this discussion before.  You suggested allowing homosexuals to have an institution that has the same rights but just not call it marriage.  And i suggested that if you took that approach you were guaranteeing gay marriage because what you were suggesting would be viewed as separate and unequal.

Not at all.  Singling out groups to limit their rights is not a constitutional right envisioned by the ballot initiative of the California constitution.  At least that is what the ruling stated.

California has been here before almost two dozen times.  This is not news.  District 9 is notoriously liberal and they always get a liberal judge to overturn the votes.  And then we take it to Supreme Court, and District 9 is overturned...again and again and again.

Eventually, the Supreme Court is going to sanction these judges for wasting their time.

Actually, i think the SC may not even hear the case.  This was, quite frankly, an extremely narrow ruling.

Except, of course, that the state had previosuly extended the right and proposition 8 targeted a specific population to deny them rights won in the legislature.

What "rights?"

You really do not know much about the state in which you live, do you?  Prior to prop 8, the legislature had granted same-sex couples all of the rights of married couples with the exception of calling it marriage.  That is what prop 8 took away, according to the ruling.
