IMO....the Cardinal was being "Politically Correct"..........
Sect leaders often have to be political in order to avoid predatory lawsuits by the flakes.  An extended lawsuit would really jeapordize some of the sects financially.

Isn't it great, the decent people have to defend themselves against the perverts.  It is a power struggle, and the side with the most bucks usually wins.

We had the same thing happen in the UMC, and it was decided to be best to let the issue lie.  That did not mean the church endorsed gay behavior.
