"Nina Fedoroff told the BBC One Planet programme that humans had exceeded the Earth's "limits of sustainability".

Dr Fedoroff has been the science and technology advisor to the US secretary of state since 2007, initially working with Condoleezza Rice.

Under the new Obama administration, she now advises Hillary Clinton.

"We need to continue to decrease the growth rate of the global population; the planet can't support many more people," Dr Fedoroff said, stressing the need for humans to become much better at managing "wild lands", and in particular water supplies.

Pressed on whether she thought the world population was simply too high, Dr Fedoroff replied: "There are probably already too many people on the planet."

GM Foods 'needed'

A National Medal of Science laureate (America's highest science award), the professor of molecular biology believes part of that better land management must include the use of genetically modified foods.

"We have six-and-a-half-billion people on the planet, going rapidly towards seven.

"We're going to need a lot of inventiveness about how we use water and grow crops," she told the BBC.

Okay, so who needs to die to save the planet, then, Nina?

I really get tired of these geneticists....

Not to mention the studies showing GM foods are awful for farmers, etc..

Nina.
1) Perhaps you need to start your own little farm.
2) Maybe you would like to spearhead a movement for concerned citizens to "off" themselves for the sake of the planet OR
3) Maybe you might disclose how much money you have received for your "research" from Monsanto and other "concerned" companies who are into the whole Genetically Modified program....

At the end of a long day...OH and she's a darling of Hillary Clinton's....how convenient for those who feel they are SO ABOVE the rest of us.

GM crops are deadly for so many reasons.

Seems kinda like a: "the sky is black at night" type of announcement.  Tongue

Judging from the epidemic obesity I see on the news and on the streets I think we have much more potential to support humanity here in the US. If need be we could reduce our consumption by 1/3, lose dozens of pounds of unwanted fat that is killing us, and have more left fort next generation.

Should America try to feed the planet?  I am not interested in doing that. Often I see pictures of people who are underfed and with that I see what is apparently rich land, ample rainfall, and a very mild climate.  Those folks need to learn to get more out of their ag systems.

Apparently Ms. Federoff doesn't realize that the first thing she should do to "solve the problem" of overpopulation should be to "rid herself" of it by cleansing Mother Earth of herself?

Yeah, it's always the way with "those people."  "There are too many people on Earth.  Some of them should be eradicated...oh, wait?  What do you mean ME?  No.  I mean YOU!!"

Most of the stuff in the post is claptrap and not very scientific.  One of the difficulty in the manufacture and patenting of foodstuffs is control and maniprulation of the food supply.

It is very scientific. France just banned GMO maize, for example. India is banning GMO crops, etc.

You can google this on your own. A lot of information out there. Monsanto's terminator seeds and round-up weeds out of control as well. But, control is the key word.

i wrote a lot of the stuff not all of the stuff.  The terminator seeds, it seems to me are the principle problem.

i would suggest if you are going to stake out a position you should put up the proof for it rather than telling others to do the research.

Local farmers are using roundup ready seeds and I haven't heard of any problems.  With plants grown from these seeds you can spray to kill the weeds without hurting the plants.  It is an alterative to cultivating, which is a form of tillage.

You'd think starving people wouldn't much care what was in their food, frankly.

If I was starving, I'd eat a rat's anus and be thankful.

And Ivan, if you can read this, I did say that the next person discussing another person's sexual orientation in a demeaning way would get a vacation.

So, we can see you in a week.

It might be good to take a break, frankly. For many of you for that matter. Lot of things happening in the world.
