"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of men's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses, for art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment."

There is no need to badger people about what they believe. The point of the episode is that in a totalitarian state anyone can be deemed "obsolete" depending on what they are seen to be doing against the status quo. Whether it be a "librarian" who believes in God or someone who shows a human frailty when faced with death.

But human beings are worthy in their being human and the individual life means something/has value.

peace (as dagon would say:))

Not to defend totalitarianism, but the fact is that anyone can be deemed "obsolete" by anyone at any time in any system. This is why I keep trying to tell you that the system itself is not important, but rather it is the culture and the traditions that matter. We have some culture and some tradition that value human life, but even that culture and that tradition has not always worked.

I know you don't like to acknowledge the slavery issue but that did happen over the first 100 years of our nation, and the "obsolete" thing didn't even end after we abolished slavery. Or we can point to some of the labor issues, or the gangsterism of the 1920s, or any number of instances where human life was devalued in our nation.
