"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of men's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses, for art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment."

Some shows have matched the Twilight Zone in writing and atmosphere, none have surpassed it.

In my opinion, that series represents one of the few summits of televsion as an art form.

Brava lucy! Another thought-provoking classic from Rod Serling. I found this passage particularly inciteful as it describes the philosophy of the many liberals I find my self surrounded by here:

This is not a new world: It is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advances, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: Logic is an enemy, and truth is a menace.

Good one.

Now all you need to do is to figure out how to use logic and truth and you're all set.

I got a better idea. I'll prove the merits of the above statement. (Watch this everyone)

Unlike you I can give a straight answer.

What the Nova series showed you was that everything you think you "know" is an illusion.

Mornac: Rod Serling was no "Conservative". His "Liberal" messages got him into all sorts of trouble, in the course of his career. It's nice that you appreciate his art, but keep in mind that his condemnation of things like dictators, book burners and thought control were not confined to situations where the "bad guy" is an atheist. History is replete with tyrannical theocrats and extreme Right Wing dictators, and the ground filled with their victims. Right Wing states and statists, unless they're watched very, very closely, and their power constrained, can be - and have been - every tiny bit as destructive to free thought, logic, truth, and individual freedom as any that ever existed.

I'm well aware of Serling's liberalism, but being a liberal meant something quite different in the late 50s and early sixties than it did after the New Left took over the Democrat Party and the university faculties after the 60s.

Liberal or not, Serling was a genius of sorts [hell, I even liked 'Night Gallery'! Grin]

Which members of the New Left are in charge of the Democrats?  What are the programs they are pursuing that is similar to those of the New Left?

--I was making no comment on Rod Serling or his political views. I only indicated  that I felt he was very talented. Nor have I asserted in any way that I think that “dictators, book burners and thought control were not confined to situations where the "bad guy" is an atheist.” In fact I agree with everything you say in the rest of that paragraph. I was only pointing out that the passage I cited – particularly it’s “iron rule” describes the philosophy of the many liberals I find myself surrounded by here. That is a fact.

It doesn't matter how you go about affixing labels, or calling people the New this, or the Old that...or even whether you call folks Liberals, Conservatives, or whatever other pigeonhole you want to fit them into. Once you go down the road of saying, "Well they do that...we don't", you're essentially screwed. "We maintain control and unity by means of logic and truth, while those people have only fear and repression"...that's the kind of thinking (loosely defined) that causes people to lose sight of the very principles and beliefs they claim to own.

I find that it "describes the philosophy" that certain posters would like us to believe that "liberals" subscribe to. That's far from being the same thing.
