But it is not correct that Christmas is the only time you can get them...at least around here.  They are also available for Valentine's Day.

I was wondering yesterday why they’re limited and I thought it may have something to do with the “fresh fruit” factor. How long can a cherry keep in a sugary coffin?

Pretty sure "fresh fruit" doesn't enter the equation when it comes to these things as they are Maraschino cherries...which are cured in formaldehyde!  O_O

What kind of shelf life should that sort of embalming provide them? If I bought ten boxes could I expect to enjoy them all the way up to Ash Wednesday? (Feb 22 this year)

I wouldn't rush through them.  They'll probably still be good a couple of centuries after we've become dust.
