The ultimate devastating price of government dependency

By Lloyd Marcus

The devastating price of government dependency. I witnessed it up close and personal in the late 50's when I was a child. Both of my mom's sisters had five kids each by various men who simply deposited their seed and moved on. As a result, both of my aunts were totally dependent on government. They lived in the projects.

The oldest of five children, I remember when my parents and four siblings also lived in the projects. We moved out to a black suburb when dad broke the color barrier into the Baltimore City Fire Department and became a firefighter.

Still, it was a treat whenever I was permitted to sleep over at my cousins' home in the projects in the exciting city.

The atmosphere at my welfare dependent cousins' home was strikingly different from mine — a subtle sadness which made me feel a little sorry for them. I felt they envied me and my siblings for having a dad who actually lived with us. I remember seeing large cans and boxes of generic labeled foods, peanut butter, powdered milk, meat, and cheese. As a child, I felt food was weirdly important to them. My siblings and I could go into our fridge anytime we desired. My cousins' fridge was off limits without permission.

Despite lots of extremely loud talking and laughter in their homes, both my aunts appeared chronically angry and bitter, with short, explosive tempers. A threat of violence constantly loomed over life in the government projects inside and outside of the home.

If you add up the financial value of what my welfare cousins received for "free" from the government (housing, food, and health care) their annual income probably far surpassed that of my dad. And yet, I considered my cousins to be poor. They perceived themselves to be poor as well.

Of my ten welfare-dependent cousins, only one remarkably "made it." He worked his way through college and became very successful. The other nine never ventured off of the government plantation — seduced by the false promise of security. Consequently, they succumbed to alcohol and drug abuse and out-of-wedlock births. Four of my cousins' lifestyles caused them to suffer early deaths.

Clearly, my two aunts' choice, or perceived lack of any other option but to totally rely on government for their survival, came at a devastatingly high price: the self-image and spirit of themselves and their children.

This tragic scenario sponsored mostly by Democrats has been playing out in the black community for at least 50 years.

A black man in the Oval Office affords the Democrats a unique opportunity. They can scream racism whenever anyone disagrees or opposes any of Obama's policies. Thus, his presidency is a golden opportunity to spread their destruction of the black family nationally to all Americans.

Why would the Democrats desire to do this, you ask? In a nutshell, it is all about them. The more Americans are dependent on government, the more Democrats are empowered. Also, the Democratic Party enthusiastically embraces all who hate America. Pure and simple.

The Democrats, supported by the liberal media, are well on their way to transforming America into a giant government-controlled plantation of dependent, lifelong, indentured servants.

For example, under Obama a record number of Americans receive food stamps. Another Democrat tactic to increase the number of Americans dependent on government and voting Democrat is to keep extending unemployment benefits — now up to 92 weeks, almost two years. What incentive is there for the unemployed to aggressively pursue a job when they know they can sit on their butts and receive a check for two years? Rather than Obama reducing ridiculous costly regulations on small business, which would create jobs, Democrats and their media partners are pressuring the Republicans to join them in further extending unemployment benefits.

Beginning in public school through college, liberals have indoctrinated our children, teaching them America is unjust, capitalism is evil, they are entitled to the fruit of other peoples' labors, and only government can make things fair and right. Liberal indoctrination birthed the Occupy movement — losers hating achievers and demanding their "fair share."

Meanwhile, 47% of Americans, almost half the country, are exempt from paying federal income taxes. Despite the rich paying most of the taxes already, Democrats are screaming for the rich to pay more.

But here is my point. There is a scary question on the minds of decent Americans. The question is, have we reached "the tipping point" — the point where teachers and professors have stolen the minds of too many of our youths; the point where Democrats have made so many Americans dependent upon some form of government handout that a majority of Americans surrender their freedom, liberty, and our culture to big government.

Nothing in life is free. While my cousins received free cradle-to-grave government handouts, they paid a devastating price for their dependency. They lost themselves, their self-esteem, pride, and dignity. They lost the joy of success after failure. They lost the pursuit of their dreams. They lost the experience of developing their God given-gifts and talents. For perceived security, my cousins willingly remained slaves on the Democrats' government plantation.

Here is what Ben Franklin had to say about folks who worship security.

"He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security."

Due to the lack of American history taught in our public schools, I would not be surprised if a student asked, "Ben Franklin, ain't he the guy who dated J-Lo?"

I do not fear for America because I believe God still has us in His Hands. However, I am extremely concerned that we have culturally and morally lost our way.

Today, it is no longer embarrassing to depend on welfare for survival. Many feel justified demanding government rob the rich to redistribute to them in the name of fairness and compassion. These suckers are clueless to the truth that the confiscated funds go to public sector unions which recycle the funds back to the Democratic Party via union dues.

But here is the rub. You government-dependency junkies do not get of Scott-free. Remember, nothing in life is free. You ultimately pay a devastating price for your class envy, laziness, hate, and fear. In the process, you lose yourself.

The economy may be weak, unemployment strong and the first family soon to vacate the White House for another half-month of vacation in Hawaii.

But the Obamas have gone all out in decorating their house this year, including a nearly quarter-ton gingerbread White House.

They have also installed 37 different Christmas trees. Thirty of the trees are live, or were, including one nearly 19-feet tall from Wisconsin. Seven of the three dozen Christmas trees are artificial or homemade including, of course, one from recyclables.

"We have 37 Christmas trees here at the White House--37!" Michelle Obama excitedly told a recent group of visitors. "That's a lot, right? Yes, that's a lot of trees. And we also have a 400-pound White House gingerbread house."

Virtually every room has also been decorated for the holidays with some kind of a replica of the Obamas' dog, Bo, who's being made into a kind of first family Christmas canine symbol.

The Bo's are made of all sorts of materials and come in all sizes. There are Bo's made of pom-poms (750 of them), Bo's made from about 2,000 pieces of licorice, Bo's made from some 35 yards of wool felt and Bo's made from nearly 7,000 feet of plastic trash bags. There's even a nine-inch Bo made from hundreds of buttons.

So abundant are the decorations for visitors to the Obama White House to view that the first family needed more than 100 volunteers to fly in from all over the country to help set up the numerous displays, including photos and letters from military families and even some aluminum cans.

The theme the first lady chose for the decorations was "Share, Give, Shine."

Of course, every administration decorates the White House in some way for holidays, from green fountain water in mid-March to evergreen wreaths come December.

The extravagance of 2011's decorations, however, are striking given the widespread joblessness, pale economic growth, home foreclosures and grim outlook for 2012, not to mention the incumbent president's historically low approval rating heading into his reelection bid.

How simple, politically astute, symbolically helpful and cost-effective it would have been for the Obamas this year to say that in sympathy with so many struggling countrymen, they were curtailing holiday decorations to match the sacrifices of others.

Mrs. Obama took another tack, however. She said the massive holiday displays in her White House are designed to make others feel better, especially military families.

"I know for some of you, this holiday season will be tough," she told some visitors. "But hopefully, it's times like this that make you know that you live in a grateful nation, and that we are just so inspired by your sacrifice. And hopefully, this is a memory that will stay with you every holiday season."

It's not that this guy is an uncle tom, it's that what he is saying is damn near 100 percent inaccurate.

47 percent of the people are not exempt from paying income taxes. 47 percent of the people  DO NOT EARN ENOUGH INCOME  to pay taxes. There is a major difference and perhaps its one conservatives better start paying attention to.

I will not be told how to think by whites. This is what you are trying to do by posting up the blatherings of a black idiot conservative.

You see this dumb ass doesn't get that in 1960's blacks had a 55 percent rate of poverty. Today it is about half of that. So then what he has said is untrue, and the claims of this not working is also untrue.

Just like every other lie conservaties have told.

If I wanted to get rich today, I would write a book sounding like a black conservative. Whites would eat it up, and I would make milions, because I would be saying what certain white folks want to hear. I would be touted as the greatest thing since the penicillon shot, and I would be employed by Fox news sitting right next to Hannity. In fact I would probably get my own show.

"Anything but the truth", that is the conservative motto.

The president is not supposed to lead the nation in Gloom and Doom. The president, regardless of how tough times are, is supposed to present a positive outlook and hope. If he was seen moping with his head down whining about how tough things are, you conservatives would bitch about that too. Your article has no merit. It should be erased.

I would NEVER call Obama "cheap."  "Opulent," perhaps, but never "cheap."

I wonder who is going to water those 37 Christmas trees while he spends half a month in Hawaii

<sarcasm>37! Thirty Seven! Holy cow! Can you imagine? How dare these "uppity kenyan muslim" folks do such a thing. On the other hand if a white President had 37 crucifixes or nativity scenes it'd be no problem. Bush even had 27 trees-no problem. How dare this black president ever try to show any christmas spirit. After all, he's not even Christian even though he spent more than a decade in Jeremiah Wright's church. In fact there's no solid proof he was ever born period, right? And now they have solid proof that his wife is cheating on him. Solid if you consider the Globe a credible source. <sarcasm>

  C'mon you guys...

Perry thinks Solyndra is a country. Newt thinks the Palestinians aren't a "real" people. Bachmann Claims she shared the same home town w/ John Wayne-but she missed the last word(Gacy!),Herman didn't know dick about Libya or Uzbecki-beki-beki-stan-stan. Newt and Romney both flip flop more than you ever accused John Kerry of doing. And now you're bitching about .....Christmas trees? Really? You do realize that it doesn't matter who wins your nomination, that Obama will easily trounce you guys in November, right? And when he does that-I hope next Xmas he puts up 57 xmas trees, just to be in your face.

Because I'm quite sure the faux outrage at anything this President does is because Republicans are so pissed off that a black man won the White House. They oppose EVERY goddamned thing he and his wife do.

Yeah.  Two things:

1:  I'm not a Republican.
2:  I am not "outraged."

I am laughing at the insensitivity of this sitting President who surrounds himself with opulence while everyone else is in the shitter.

james joyner puts this succinctly:

For one thing, these Christmas trees aren’t for the Obamas. Rather, they’re for the tens of thousands of tourists who line up in the cold to tour the White House during the holidays. Indeed, precisely because of all the tourists running around, this is the part of the White House that the Obamas are least likely to use.
For another, the notion that the best thing one can do during a bad economy is to cut back on spending is remarkably counterproductive. If anything, the Obamas should be laying on more Christmas trees–and so should the rest of those fortunate to have jobs. That’s, after all, how people who sell and transport trees and ornaments put food on their tables. The last thing they need is for people to start cutting back in some bizarre show of solidarity.

I used to be in The Christmas Tree Business.  If you think people only sell Christmas Trees (and pumpkin lots) during the year and then sit around watching porn while eating Cheetos is all they do, you haven't the slightest clue.

It's fantastic money, but the only people making any money off of it are those who grow trees and those who sell them.

Wrong answer racist SOB. You are whining like this because you can't take the fact a black man is now president. You're crying about opulence  because of a claim of 37 christmas trees. It's apparent what your problem is.
