It is the Christmas season officially.

"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of men's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses, for art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment."

I prefer the secular part of Christmas over the spiritual part, but both have some nice music.

Greensleeves is also called "What Child Is This", and is an old English song that refers to the newborn Christ.  I also like "Little Drummer Boy" and the more traditional songs we used to sing the night before Christmas at the church services.  Many are more oriented to children than to adults, but we are all kids at heart.

Secular favorites are White Christmas, The Christmas Song, Silvers Bells, and many more.

I had bought a book of Christmas songs produced by the Readers Digest people several years ago, and there is a little blurb about Silver Bells in it that I
found interesting.  Seems like someone noticed that the pretty secular Christmas songs were always about country venues and the author person wanted a song for the city dwellers.  As I play the song on the piano I thnk of that background.

I am a sentimental nut when it comes to Christmas, and even though my parents were poor we always got together at one of my father's relatives. Grandma was a great cook, and the aunts and uncles from the city had things we country bumpkins could not afford, like special foods and decorations.  I can remember my aunt Wimpy and her bubble lights, some of the first.  They were white with a colored base, and got very hot.  Somewhat of a fire hazard on a real tree.

The treat of the day for me is when the great uncle gave each child a silver half dollar wrapped in amber see thru paper.

My wife and I got out the big artificial tree yesterday and assembled it.  I suppose we will spend some time today decorating the house as it is too wet and cold to gather leaves.  Sometimes I wish we could have friends in for Christmas because our relatives are either dead or far away.  I don't care much for belligerent older kids but the little tykes make Christmas worth the effort. We have a 14 month grandson this year that is a riot to watch.

To me Christmas is a romantic time for adults, particularly grandmas and grandpas as we sit and reminisce about our younger days. My wife is getting hard to buy for because she has so many nice things, and I spoil her year round anyway. We need to live near a larger town like Dallas so we can go where she can wear her clothes and nice jewelry.

I think that Christmas is also a sentimental time, and it brings back memories of the good old days when we did not have so much meanness, division, and political correctness.
We would go out and take care of the farm animals, and then would come in for presents and good eats. The loving farm animals are like pets, very dependent and very consistent with their love.  We even tried to give them extra hay and grain on that day, and the cows would really hustle to get that good ground milo. It must be like candy to them.  Molasses cubes are also a favorite, must be the sweetness.

Cockers may be dumb but ours know how to find their little Crhistamas gifts under the tree.  We usually put their little toys and treats in decporative sacks so they can snoop and get into them on Christmas morning. It amazes me how they can know it is Christmas time and that special things happen then.

I gave Honey a piece of my cold turkey sandwich the other evening, as she is always bumming off of me. She loves the turkey but sorts out the lettuce with her little tongue and leaves that for me.  Ha.  She is a real daddy girl and loves to go in the truck, and it doesn't matter where, just so we go.

The older country artists had some very nice Christmas songs. I don't know what the modern titty babies do for Chsristmas other than screw up tradition.

We didn't have TV when I was a kid and didn't watch the Rose Bowl parade and the football games.  Maybe that is why my father's big family got together and sang and ate big dinners.

Christmas is a sentimental time for me because only two aunts survive.  One lives in Denver, a long way to go for Christmas, and the other has Alzheimers and hardly knows people any more.

My kids and grandkids live in the Dallas area so we are going back again this year for a long weekend before the holiday weekend. Couldn't get the dog into the kennel for the Christmas weekend.  My kids don't cook and don't have a traditional Christmas, plus they don't have room for much of a gathering.

It is amazing, maybe two dozen of us used to gather at grannies in her little efficiency house.  She had folding chairs and tables, and some of us ate with our plates in our laps, but we were together and had love and hope for a brighter future.

i'm a complete atheist heathen but i love the holiday season.  songs that come to mind?  well shows mostly;  the legendary bing crosby christmas shows always come to mind.

"This Christmas" by Donnie Hathaway is a perennial favorite.  I'm not sure if you white guys have heard it but it's a perennial fixture in most black homes:

Donny Hathaway isn't that person who sings the theme for Maude...

We like almost all xmas music, but high on my own playlist is:
Mannheim Steamroller and Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Merry Axemas-A Guitar Christmas, Vols 1 & 2

My daughter loves her Chipmunks xmas tunes, And we top it off with tons- and I do mean tons- of other xmas music too numerous to list. It's neat to listen to several artist's covers of these classics.

Me too.  I like almost all of it, but not the extremely religious stuff.

Our Christmas season doesn’t begin for almost a month from now and I’m not a huge fan of the pre-Christmas season.  It’s too overweighted with secular things and those usually lead to trouble. Already the headlines are full of incidents that happened at Black Friday events that should embarrass all members of Western civilization. There are a few things I like. Lights on houses are kind of nice. Eggnog with brandy is something that would never hit the same spot if you served it on the 4th of July.

Q. Mornac, do you have any demonstrative proof that your god exists?
A. Yes
