General Electric is planning  to move its 115-year-old X-ray division from
Waukesha , Wis. , to Beijing . In addition to  moving the headquarters, the company
will invest $2 billion in China and train more than  65 engineers and create six
research centers. This is the same GE that  made $5.1 billion in the United
States last year, but paid no taxes-the  same company that employs more people
overseas than it does in the   United States .

So let me get this straight. President Obama  appointed GE Chairman Jeff Immelt
to head his commission on job creation  (job czar). Immelt is supposed to help
create jobs.
I guess the  President forgot to tell him in which country he was supposed to be
creating those jobs.

If this doesn't show you the total lack of  leadership of this President, I
don't know what does.

I had some xrays done this past week with a big GE rig.  Very impressive machine.  When we lose products like this and the associated jobs we are taking a real hit.  There is no telling what the machine they used on me cost, easily a million bucks.  And when you look at the complexity of it and the many features, that meant a lot of assembly and installation jobs.

An old story comes to mind that has a good morale to it.  A union leader and one of the Ford family were talking about the upcoming wage negotiations and the Ford man wished he could just automate the factory and do away with the many problems that human labor posed.  The union man replied, yes Mr. Ford, but robots do not buy cars.

Which brings me to a point I would like to raise.  What is the long term rationale of those who move good jobs offshore and expect American consumers to still buy their foreign made products?  Where are the American customers supposed to get money to buy things with if they don't have a job?

One possibility is that corp execs see profits in the upcoming foreign markets as the basket  case economies grow. But I will bet they have more than one price scale.  How can a peon making a few dollars a day afford things that Americans pay hundreds of dollars for?  Or do the execs expect to sustain their profits by selling to the foreign  uber rich?  How many xray machines does a  sheik or a monarch need anyway?  Does anyone see my point?

yeah, obama shouldn't have appointed this guy but he can't be blamed for the situation of g.e. outsourcing and paying zero taxes.  that's what i've been trying to tell you guys.  obama has been trying to reform the tax code so these guys can't outsource and get tax breaks.

the republicans under bush brought this about and the current republicans won't even entertain the idea to reward companies for keeping jobs stateside.

Obama Pledges $500 Million To Reinvent U.S. Manufacturing
"We need to reinvigorate our manufacturing industry to lead the world."

What manufacturing industry is Obama talking about???
Most of the manufacturing facilities have been torn down and disposed of..... but not as quickly as they did the buildings knocked down on 911......or converted to a service industry business?

Anderson, SC

J.P. Stevens textile chain put Roanoke Rapids on the map as a thriving mill town.

Grown men cried when the blast furnace was dynamited
Youngstown is now a smaller city.
The dramatic collapse of the steel industry led to the loss of tens
of thousands of jobs and a precipitous decline in population.

Tearing down the Youngstown textile mill

New uses for Textile Mills in U.S. South which would only employ a minute number vs a Textile mill.

America's manufacturing industries have been decimated!

i think that's the point dustup.  our manufacturing base NEEDS to be reinvented.  what's the alternative?

a stagnant economy with nothing but service and health care jobs?

The most successful men I know will tell you that they are only successful because they are able to accept ‘no’ and not take it personally. Again, unsuccessful men take a ‘rejection’ as a personal assault on their inner child. Don’t make this mistake.

The idea sounds good, but whatever the new industry might be it will be a short matter of time before foreign interests wipe it out with cutthroat competition.  Just like with Japan, we spend the time and effort and the money to develop something, and then they copycat it and sell it to us at a price we cannot even build it.

As long as the idiots like Obama promote the class struggle with his dumb assed comments then do you really think anyone will give a rat's ass about American troublemakers who are out of work? I lost my good job due to a downsizing back in 1994, and it wasn't the cream of the crop that were shown the door first. Luckily I finally left while the company was still offering severance packages because eventually they simply closed the doors and turned off the lights.

I own stock in a few companies, and guess where the successful ones operate and derive their sales and profits. It sure as hell isn't Chicago or Detroit.

I used to think that if we had jobs that could only be performed here in America then that would be a secure work place, but was I wrong. Foreign labor is being imported at cut throat wage rates to displace some very experienced American workers.  The party line is that there is a shortage of skilled Americans to do the jobs.  No shit, if a graduate can't get a job then why should he spend time and money  feeding hogs like johnhp with his tuition?

I just fail to see the rationale of  the feds being in bed with the greedy corp execs for the purpose of decimating the American labor force.  Long term that will blow back in their faces big time and a 9 percent unemployment rate will look damned good compared to what it will end up to be. And with the jobs go the tax base  because the wealthy can afford to avoid paying for a losing economy.

We can blame Obama and we can blame Bush, but I see this as a non-partisan cancer that has been foisted on us by some crooks in the federal govenment, all 535 plus of the unconscious parasites
