Bastrop, Texas (CNN) -- Texas is in urgent need of a federal disaster declaration to help respond to wildfires throughout the state, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said Friday.

Nearly 1,400 homes have been destroyed in Bastrop County, Texas, since a wildfire started there six days ago, Dewhurst said. Other major fires are burning in Cass, Travis, Grimes, Montgomery and Waller counties, according to the Texas Forest Service.

Dewhurst, who is acting governor while Gov. Rick Perry travels, said he got no response to a statewide disaster declaration request earlier this week. So he has signed another one to drive the point home.

"We need help yesterday," Dewhurst said.

There was no immediate response from the White House.

A disaster declaration would give the state access to heavy equipment, personnel, supplies and other support that would help it respond after nearly 300 consecutive days of wildfires, Dewhurst said.

While Texas burns Obama hedges and Perry campaigns....

it's not a one-liner.  it's the truth.  those are your choices.  you can discuss it if you want.

so you don't want to discuss which one out of perry or rommney either you would prefer or think will win the nom?  fine by me.  you're going to have to have that conversation with yourself sooner or later.  here's a hint:  ron paul isn't winning.

As much as I like Romney "personally" you've actually persuaded me that some of his religious beliefs may make him at least "less" electable.  Much as I hate to admit it, a significant portion of the Republican vote lives and breathes that shit.

Stupid as hell but true.  Romney's religion, no sillier to me than any other, just might be too much of a drag on his electability.

Did you notice how well he comprehended Foodservers's comment?  When an idiot cannot even handle one word and put it in context then he doesn't belong on an adult forum. He is simply not up to the task.

Hey donkey, ever heard of a third party candidate? Given the fact that both major parties are dysfunctional, we could use an alternative.

Give bubble head a few more months to really shit in his nest and the Republicans could win with Al Gore or Jimmy Carter for a candidate.

why the donkey?  i'm not a democrat.  anyway,  we need more than a third party but what we've got is what we've got.  and if you're a "conservative",  you'r choices are coming from the republicans in any real way.

What better resume is there for President than governor (re-elected) of a large economically successful state?  Seriously?  I've no doubt you can go to Huffpuff or somewhere and find an economic angle to put in a negative light and of course we all know that all Republicans want the poor to starve and die and the seniors to eat dog food and so, everyone who dies in Texas before the age of 100, died because Perry "didn't care enough" but at the end of the day, Texas is responsible for 30% of the total national job creation and that right now is what the folks are lookin' for.

I agree that, without being able to put my finger on it, he's a bit "off-putting" or "too Western", I don't know how to describe it.  Kind of like Guiliani was too "east coast" for my taste, but I don't think ANYONE in the Party this time around gives a rip about having their own "personal favorite" as the nominee.  We're all lookin' for that guy that EVERYBODY ELSE likes.  As many good people as there are in the Party available to serve, in my opinion, there is NO ONE in the party that is vitally important to get in.  What's vitally important, is to get Obama OUT!

My own personal choice would never have a chance and that is---Jeb Bush.  But I'm thinkin' that Romney/Cain would be a very strong ticket to go up against Obama/Biden.

Disclaimer:  As we both know, my record of picking Republican nominees sucks  Smiley
