By taking Social Security and Medicare benefits (in her married name rather than her well known public name) Rand, to use her language, delivered herself "into gradual enslavement.”

Quote

An interview with Evva Pryror, a social worker and consultant to Miss Rand's law firm of Ernst, Cane, Gitlin and Winick verified that on Miss Rand's behalf she secured Rand's Social Security and Medicare payments which Ayn received under the name of Ann O'Connor (husband Frank O'Connor).
As Pryor said, "Doctors cost a lot more money than books earn and she could be totally wiped out" without the aid of these two government programs. Ayn took the bail out even though Ayn "despised government interference and felt that people should and could live independently... She didn't feel that an individual should take help."

It's only evil socialism when they complain about other's using it.....

My points about Rand and todays Republicans who "use" her.

First of all I think she was one of the most evil selfish shifty eyed bitches who ever walked the planet, who also happened to be a very skilled opinionated writer, but also a phony and a hypocrite. That being said, it has become the fashionable thing to simply chant "Atlas Shrugged" as a mantra on the right as of late while conveniently leaving out the truth that Rand herself used and did not refuse or rebuke socialist programs in her senior years. Add to that, she didn't believe in 'God" which is a cardinal sin to christians and basically the majority of today's republican party. And, as I have pointed out, she doesn't believe the law has any place in 2 peoples lives, even though she has her own personal opinion about their lifestyle. In otherwords, her view in regards to government legislating against homsexuality, or for that matter gay marriage, is that it is wrong, which basically flies against todays republican party belief system.

JC

What i cannot wait to see is either the utter silence (udder! silence) on the part of her devotees here.  Either than or the ridiculous defenses.

Looks like there will be silence.

It' s just the simple fact that Rand wrote fiction that kills me about all of this.  Fiction and these guys have used fiction to base their polticial philosophy on. Then they think we are to take them seriously. Atlas Shrugged was a fictional depiction, not real life. Hell why not base your philospohy on 1984, or the Illustrated man?

Of course there will be silence.  If this had been a case of some unknown leftist who at one point had dinner at the same restaurant that Obama went to once, six years later, after the menu had changed....well our own Inspector Clouseau (wothout the humor) would shit himself trying to connect those dots.  Well, not connect the dots but to make odd assertions about the household Obama was raised in based on the market price of green beans last Thursday, not to mention that suspicious smudge on the menu.

Observer,

I'm afriad not. Because there have been countless biblical prophecies that have come true. Kinda like all the strange weather patterns we have been experiencing lately.

I am not attacking anyone, John. I leave that for you cowpies.

Whether Rand received any benefits from the State has no bearing on her work.

Of course it does.  It means that the author of the word DID not believe it.

Psychology types used to quote her and worship her.  I think they were a fucked up in the head as she was. Her shit did not sell or we'd hear more of it. Most people don't even know who the silly goose is.  When I hear lefties throwing her name around on this forum I think, big fuckin' deal.

In academic circles she is a marginal influence at best.

I hate to break it to you Ivan, but you're not getting it this time. Righties are the ones who have been embracing Ayn Rand and her work and praising and using Atlas Shrugged as one of their main philosophies and mantras. When the lefties bring it up we are pointing out the "other side" about her, the unvarnished truths about her real life vs. her fiction book writing, and other things she has actually said and done beyond the fictional books that the right wingnuts cling to for their philosophy. In other words, we are pointing out the sheer hypocracy of righties using her and her work, while not really having a complete clue about her. So, you should really be thinking "big fucking deal" when your pal fs talks about Atlas Shrugged, not when we raise our issues about it. You just don't like the lefties so you're going to have a problem with anything we do(without really thinking about it-a kneejerk reaction, kinda like this morning with your misplaced "two wrongs" comment alzheimers/tourettes moment. try analyzing and actually thinking about some things instead of just going "crabby old man" at every turn. Take off the blindfold and focus for a change before blurting out garbage.
