You really need to learn to comprehend.  I said they can be, not that they had been.

Many things like this make more sense than the wall Trump is proposing.

Probably. I think the bottom line is that citizens want to stop illegal immigration, and to date, the only viable methods have been the walls that GWB and Obama built in limited areas.

I guess I could see other limited-length walls in areas that are easy to breech but I'm in construction, remember? For a whole wall the length of our border, we're talking hundreds of billions and much of that waste would be due to government contractors ripping off the taxpayers.

Israel built walls, and while they are tunneled under, they've stopped a lot of adversarial folks who used to strap bombs on their children and send them into Jewish marketplaces. So walls work - but only to a degree.

Here's info on the laser wall, and it sounds promising to me. Maybe it could be a compromise both parties could get behind.

The problem with a "laser wall" is that all it does is detect people crossing the border. It doesn't actually stop anyone. The only thing that will do that is a physical barrier.

Why have a system that requires you to try to catch them after they cross when you can have one that prevents them from crossing in the first place?

Not if it's a Death Ray Laser.

I'm just kidding about that, but it seemed like the thing to say.

I think a physical wall would stop at least 90% of the illegal entrants. Maybe 95%. But the ones who are the most determined -- the ones who either scale the wall or tunnel under -- will be the ones we least want in our country. I think the biggest problem is the length of our border.

We can't build a continuous wall for 5 billion dollars. We probably can't build one for 100 billion dollars -- not with the way government union contractors rip off the taxpayers. We could build shorter walls in high-risk areas, however, and I'm not opposed to that at all. But, I also think the laser idea has merit because it alerts the authorities (if it works as claimed) to the presence of anyone approaching the border.

I agree that trying to catch the illegals after they're here is self-defeating.

Half of illegal immigrants come here through normal ports of entry and simply stayed past their visa expiration.
absolutely nothing will be found.

there is nothing to be found.

Link?

So?? That still doesn't mean that we don't need a wall for the other 50%. At least if we stop the 50% at the border, that gives LE and ICE more time and resources to go after the Visa violators.
