Trump demands $5 Billion from Congress for wall

A battle over Trump's border wall could shut down major parts of the government for the third time this year
The federal government could see its third partial shutdown this year if Congress does not fund parts of the government by Dec. 7.
President Donald Trump seeks $5 billion for his proposed border wall, a sum Democrats appear unwilling to approve.
As much of the government is already funded, the effects of a shutdown on its functions would be limited.

U.S. government funding may lapse next week and cause the third partial government shutdown of the year.

Once again, a spat over President Donald Trump's immigration plans has derailed talks to keep the government open.

Congress faces a Dec. 7 deadline to fund parts of the government. Trump signed spending legislation in September for five agencies, such as the departments of Defense and Health and Human Services, for the next fiscal year. But lawmakers still need to fund seven other agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security.

As Congress has already approved money for large parts of the federal government, a partial shutdown will have limited effects on its core functions. The funding fight does have stakes for how much of the president's immigration agenda he can enact as a migrant crisis plays out at the southern border.

Trump has pushed for $5 billion in U.S. funding for his proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border — despite his repeated campaign pledge to force Mexico to fund the barrier. Democrats appear reluctant to agree to that sum, the biggest remaining sticking point in the talks. The president told congressional Republicans on Tuesday that he will not back down from the $5 billion demand, according to The Washington Post.

Trump has spoiled for a fight over the wall for more than a year. As the potential political damage of a shutdown has lessened after the midterm elections, the president has seemed increasingly open to letting funding lapse to make a statement.

He has made it a particular point of emphasis as he stokes fears about a so-called caravan of Central American migrants seeking asylum in the United States. Trump has used immigration as perhaps his main tactic to rile up the Republican political base.

In a Tuesday interview with Politico in which he said he would "totally be willing" to shut down the government over wall funding, Trump called the border "a total winner" as a political issue. However, he claimed he does not do anything "just for political gain."

Ask barry for $150 billion dollars he gave the
terrorists of Iran, in cash.
Where did that money come from?

President Barack Obama has received yet another title — but this one isn't exactly something to brag about.

The fact checkers at the Tampa Bay Times' PolitiFact have given Obama their annual "Lie of the Year" award for this statement:

"If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your private health insurance plan, you can keep your plan." (Via The White House)

"If you like your current insurance, you will keep your current insurance." (Via Fox News)

"If you like your health care plan, you will keep your plan." (Via C-SPAN)

Hey sport. You never answered the question.
Where did barry get the money to pay off
the terrorist regime of Iran?
$150 billion bucks bozo.
That would make a fantastic wall to keep
you illegal aliens out of our country.

What has Obama and Iran got to do with my topic title Trump demands $5 billion from congress for wall?  Nothing.  You're deflecting and not addressing the subject.   ::)

LOL!  The money was Iranian frozen Iranian assets, not U.S. funds.  Do you honestly think John Boehner and Mitch McConnell would fork over $150 billion in U.S. funds at Obama's request?   ::)

Fact-Checking Trump’s ‘Fox & Friends’  Interview
By Justin Bank
April 26, 2018

During an expansive phone call with the hosts of “Fox & Friends” on Thursday morning, President Trump distanced himself from his personal lawyer Michael D. Cohen and offered more details of negotiations with North Korea.

He also made statements about Iran, unemployment among black Americans, his record on deregulation and the 2016 election results that were imprecise or lacked context. Below is an assessment.

The Obama administration “made a horrible deal, giving $150 billion, giving $1.8 billion in cash, actual cash, carried out in barrels and in boxes, from airplanes.”
This is misleading.
The United States did not directly give Iran money as part of the 2015 nuclear deal. But the United States and European nations did release about $100 billion — not $150 billion — in previously frozen Iranian assets. Much of that money is tied up in debt obligations. For example, $20 billion is owed to China for financing projects in Iran. Estimates for the actual amount available to Iran range from $35 billion to $65 billion.

The Obama administration did transfer $1.7 billion — not $1.8 billion — to Iran in 2016. That money was delivered in cash, some of it on a plane. But it was a payment related to a decades-long dispute and was indirectly linked to the nuclear deal.

Fact Check: Trump’s claim that Iran got $150 billion from the United States
“When I look at the Iran deal and how bad a deal it is for us, it’s a one-sided transaction where we’re giving back $150 billion to a terrorist state, really, the number one terror state.”

–Donald Trump

Trump always makes it sound like this is U.S. taxpayer money — and he always uses a too-high estimate. Because of international sanctions over its nuclear program, Iran had billions of dollars in assets that were frozen in foreign banks around the globe. With sanctions lifted, in theory those funds would be unlocked.

But the Treasury Department has estimated that once Iran fulfills other obligations, it would have about $55 billion left. (Much of the other money was obligated to illiquid projects in China.) For its part, the Central Bank of Iran said the number was actually $32 billion, not $55 billion.

I say free up the 5 billion plus however much more it takes for Congress to fulfill its constitutionally mandated obligation to protect the borders. Closing down a few unconstitutional federal bureaucracies (like the Department of Education) should provide more than enough funds to do what needs to be done. It will also free up the worthless idiots who "work" there to take up jobs that they are more suited to - like driving for Uber or delivering for Amazon.

So was he lying when he said Mexico would pay for the wall?
--Depends on what his true intention was when he made the statement. I have no way of knowing at this point - nor do I care. It would be nice to have Mexico pay for the wall, but if we have to pay for it ourselves, well then that' s what we have to do in order to respect the terms of the Constitution.
