First you have to allow me to qualify my comments. Other than my interactions with certain state agencies like the courts, IDOR and DHS, I am not well-informed about state politics. I am probably as disgusted as you are but can only cite generalities that I have read here or there, Rod Blagovich's moronic escapades, and the truly pathetic performance of Republicans when they were in control.

I'm not sure what one could reasonably expect from Quinn under the circumstances which include budget problems in the middle of a horrific economic crises nationwide. It doesn't seem to me as though he has had any opportunity whatsoever to look good. The time to have done certain things would have been before the economy went to hell.

Further, what I would like to see happen will probably never happen. I think the state could save a lot of money by legalizing drugs. As I understand it, improved treatment would do more to diminish drug abuse than sticking offenders in prison. I don't know the numbers but I think the money saved on decreasing the burden on law enforcement would be significant and I know the reduction in incarcerations would be a huge cost saving. Further we could tax and regulate the recreational drug industry which would bring in revenue, part of which could be used for better education and treatment.

Further, as I understand incarceration it is the best criminal training anyone can get. Convicts leave prison with better contacts and a huge potential for recidivism, so I think we might end up saving money if we don't give some people this opportunity.

Other than that, Boffo, I don't know. I'd like to know more but I don't and I probably won't.

a pretty long non answer, there Vel

I find your position on drugs interesting though, you should start a thread on the subject as it is becoming a national debate....at least in California and some other liberal areas

my position may have you gasping in astonishment

uh, johnny this isn't a call out, it's a political question on a political forum

There is no sense i was given that it has to be negative?  He takes information you provided (your political preference) and called you out on it.

Boffo

better be careful.  Rather than a substantive answer that was an ad hominem attack.  The Comité de salut public is apparently policing the threads for this.

You don't have to like it.

You give yourself way too much credit. Nothing you can say will ever have me gasping in astonishment.

With this I agree. I personally have no problem with it.

Well Boff

Neither one of these guys are "liberals" or "progressives" in the true sense.  The Democratic party in Illinois doesn't work that way as I'm sure you're well aware of.

It's gonna be tough,  I'll be honest. I've got problems with both of these guys.

The politicians get to keep what's left of their campaign contributions after they retire. It's bribery, pure and simple.

I've had friends in non-political positions tell me the same thing. Party doesn't matter, they all turn into the same damn thing or they're gone.

A guy's got to make money somehow.

i have a friend.  Protestant minister.  Good guy.  He takes the collection plate every week.  Tosses the contents up into the air.  i asked him why he did that.  He said, the way i figure it, God keeps his share and leaves the rest to fall to the floor for me.  True story (Robertson style).
