His escalation of troops in Afghanistan is particularly damaging to his base of supporters who were led to believe that he would end the war operations quickly...not to mention his support for the financial bailouts, etc. when so many poorer/middle-class Americans are feeling a real loss of jobs, etc.

"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of men's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses, for art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment."

There is a chance Obama is coming to his senses economically.  Capping executive pay is the best thing he has done.

His escalation of troops in Afghanistan has ruined any chance for reelection.

I think he has done the right thing in both cases.  In Afghanistan we just didn't have the manpower to take an area and then hold it while we moved on to another trouble area. Once we moved on the bad guys came back in and we were back to square one in that area.

I can understand the resentment about bailing out the big financials, particularly in light of the fantastic salaries and bonuses the top execs get, but we do need to keep the lines of credit open so businesses can access them.

That point really came home to me when I bought my last GM car, less than a year ago.  I could not get a GMAC loan because it was in the tank and settled for a Bank of America loan.  Loan terms and policies are tighter now, which has an upside and a downside.  On the downside, it limits the number of buyers who can qualify for the loan and the interest rates are higher than they used to be.  On the upside, tighter terms helps to shore up the credit rating of the lender as there will be fewer defaults.

I don't have trouble getting financing but I don't always like the rates, what with using the cut rate bargain of old.  I once had a 1.9% loan for six years.  Now my car loan is 6.9%, which is probably a good rate, relatively speaking, because my credit is tops.  The dealer knows I will just pay cash for the damned car if he doesn't work with me.
