I feel the need to defend at least one part of California, where I used to live - where my last duty station in the Navy was located - and that's Humboldt County, up about 300 miles north of San Francisco and practically into Oregon.  Nice people up there, low crime (well, if you don't count the pot farmers), and a very laid-back way of life generally.  The small town of 1400 people that I lived in was like a slightly hipper Mayberry.  I left there almost exactly twenty years ago, but I strongly suspect it hasn't really changed all that much in the interim.

Perry is a doofus but that is no reason to knock Texas.

That's right.  There are plenty of other reasons.

Why is it that Illinois has a per capita income 10% higher than Texas?

If Texas is so great for companies why do they have to run advertising campaigns in California, Illinois and New York trying to lure companies there?
They have excess capacity in the way of resources that need to be utilized.  The three states you mentioned are basket cases so why shouldn't a company want to leave there.  I worked in Springfield, Ill. one year and my office was located next to an industrial park that was rusting away.  Major companies were leaving the state because of their punitive policies towards businesses.

Texas is still a relatively low cost locale because there is plenty of land available for development and there is a lot of labor available that wants more than a food stamp card or a welfare check from Obama. Compared to the northern states, the year round weather in Texas is ideal for a company particularly if some of its activities are outside.

foresees?  Good luck.  So how much of this foreseeing is going to increase the per capita income of Texans in relation to those of us in Illinois?
